Gabriel Byrne and Thandie Newton as a duo of con artists looking to beat the “Dean” (Sylvester Stallone), a legendary card shark, in a high-stakes poker game. Their first step is hiring two fellow tricksters — Jamie Foxx and Stuart Townsend — to provide the smooth talking and to procure the necessary funds. Unfortunately, Larry (Foxx) blows his hand and finds himself with 85,000 dollars worth of debt owed to a local crime boss.
- Nearly every major male character in the film is named for a sleight-of-hand magician.
- Many situations in the movie are references to the book on Dai Vernon by Karl Johnson, “The Magician and the Cardsharp”.
- While all of the card tricks shown are real, not all of the techniques are described and take a while to master, but all of the actors did their own card manipulations for this movie.
- Shade was open for only five weeks in six theaters, and it grossed $459,098 in worldwide ticket sales.
